Fulton, MD is a vibrant community located in Howard County. While much of the development in Fulton has occurred over the past couple of decades, the town has a rich history dating back hundreds of years.
The land that is now known as Fulton, MD was first surveyed by Thomas Browne in 1700. Browne was known as the “Patuxent Ranger” thanks to his in-depth surveys of different land along and near the Patuxent River. In the mid-1700s, Richard Snowden created tracts of land in the Patuxent River Valley. Snowden saw the value in the beautiful land and named the area Queen Caroline Parish.
Thanks to the high profile of the Snowden family, by 1805 the area was known as Snowden Second Addition. In the mid-1800s, German immigrants settled in the greater Fulton area. The German farming community in Fulton was robust, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church opened in 1871 to serve these first-generation immigrants. By 1878, the town was big enough that a school opened to serve children.
On March 28, 1882, the town’s name was formally changed to Fulton, MD after the well-loved editor of the Baltimore Sun, Charles C. Fulton. The town continued to grow throughout the 1800s and 1900s. One of the most notable developments in Fulton is Maple Lawn. Maple Lawn sits in the same area as the local free-range turkey farm, Sho-Nuf. In the late 1990s, the first hearing to zone the Maple Lawn area took place. Instead of being a brief endeavor, it took 32 record-length hearings to approve the zoning and turn Maple Lawn into what it is now. Today, Fulton has a population of over 2,000 residents who enjoy the convenient location and interesting history of the area.
