Glenelg, MD is a lovely Howard County Community with gorgeous views and an interesting history. While the population today sits over 1,700 residents, when John Dorsey first gifted the land to his daughter in 1735 it was a far cry from what it is today.
John Dorsey, one of the first settlers in Howard County, owned the land where Glenelg, MD sits today. He gave the land to his daughter, Sarah Dorsey, for her and her husband to settle down. The property was originally called Howard’s Resolution. In the mid-18th century, a house was added to the Glenelg property and expanded upon over the years.
After the Dorsey family passed the home on, General Joseph Tyson, the Assistant Postmaster General, added to it and named it Glenelg. The name came from an old estate he knew of in Scotland. Tyson also thought it was amusing that the name of the area would be a palindrome. The area continued to expand throughout the 1700s, as Discovery Farm was built in 1729.
The Glenelg post office was opened in 1856, and it was located in the Browns General Store for over 130 years before moving to a shopping center in the 1980s. Throughout history, Glenelg maintained a reputation for being a wonderful place to live and visit. The Howard Hunt Club hunted throughout the Glenelg area, and General Patton would travel to the area just to hunt in Glenelg.
