Emmitsburg, MD was formally founded in 1785 and named after its founder, William Emmit. Before the city was officially named, numerous settlers lived in the area including many German immigrants. Emmitsburg was occupied during the Civil War by the Union, who fortified the town to prevent the Confederate invasion of Union territory in the summer of 1863. On one of those nights, half of the town was tragically burned in a mysterious fire. “The Great Fire” was rumored to have been started by a Union sympathizer who wanted to stop Confederates from taking supplies from the town.
The area changed a great deal over the course of the 19th century. Early on in the century, Emmitsburg was a major hub of wheat-growing and, at one point, was the biggest wheat supplier in the United States of America. However, by the end of the century, bad farming practices left a great deal of the once-rich land unsuitable for farming.
Following the Civil War, Emmitsburg, MD continued to grow with the addition of mills and manufacturing plants. Today, the town is still known as a lovely place to raise a family with lovely landscapes to enjoy.
