Baltimore, MD is one of the most notable cities in the greater Maryland area, and with good reason! This bustling community has plenty of cultures, businesses and sports that attract residents from all over the country. While residents love the Inner Harbor for the gorgeous weather during the warmer months, things get cold in the winter. That’s why many Baltimore homeowners rely on Husky Heating Oil to keep their home warm without breaking the bank.
Baltimore, MD, is the largest city in Maryland and often considered the economic center of the area. It separated from Baltimore County in 1851 and is the only city in Maryland that is located outside of a county as a result. Currently, the population of the greater Baltimore metro area sits at over 2.7 million residents.
The city was founded in 1729 and named after the Irish barony of Baltimore. Baltimore was a bustling port that was used to ship grain and tobacco from Maryland farmers. The city was also a hotspot for flour milling, shipbuilding and transport. The United States Navy’s first ship launched from the port of Baltimore in 1797. The city was also used as a surrogate meeting place for The Continental Congress in 1776 and 1777 when members were concerned the British would attack Philadelphia during the meeting.
Before the Civil War, Baltimore dominated the American flour trade thanks to the advanced milling technology and abundant waterways. The Battle of Baltimore took place in the city during the War of 1812. It also was the place where our national anthem was composed by Francis Scott Key!
Industries changed in the early 1900s, and Baltimore changed as a result. Steelworks, war industries and refineries grew in response to World War I. After World War II ended, the city underwent a period of transition. Today, it remains a major seaport and hub of healthcare, education, finance and insurance industries, as well as a wonderful place to live.
