Brookeville, MD is a vibrant Washington, D.C. suburb located just north of the Nation’s Capital and Olney. While the town is beloved for its community feel and rich history, residents must endure winters filled with snow, ice and sleet. If you are a Brookeville, MD homeowner looking for a more affordable way to heat your home, you can rely on Husky Heating Oil.
Brookeville, MD was first settled in the late 18th century by Quakers. Richard Thomas and Deborah Brooke were the town’s founders, and the land was initially the property of Deborah’s father, Roger Brooke. Roger’s father, James Brooke, was the largest landholder in Montgomery County at the time. When the couple built the town, they also added a mill on the Reddy Branch. In the early 1800s, Caleb Bentley opened a post office and general store, becoming the first postmaster.
The town was a popular hub for the bustling agricultural industry in the greater Washington, D.C. area. In the 19th century, the town boasted a school, post office, blacksmith, numerous mills, two churches and a variety of shops. Newlin’s Mill ground limestone and produced castor oil. In 1849, a wealthy Brookeville farmer paid to create a toll road spanning from Brookeville into the Washington, D.C. markets. This toll road was eventually sold to the State of Maryland and became what we know as Georgia Avenue.
During the War of 1812, the British troops burned portions of Washington, D.C. and troops were forced to flee the area. President James Madison eventually arrived in Brookeville on horseback, where he stayed for the night in the home of Caleb Bentley. After the war, the town continued to grow and remain a vital part of history. Today, Brookeville remains a popular destination for families looking to enjoy the amenities of Washington, D.C. with the feel of a more suburban area.
