Tevis Energy: Husky Heating Oil

Cooksville, MD is a small Howard County community with a rich and interesting history. While the Cooksville homeowners enjoy the small-town atmosphere and warm summer weather, winter can take a toll on their energy bills. Thankfully, Husky Heating Oil provides cost-effective heating oil delivery to the greater Cooksville area.

Cooksville, MD was founded by its namesake, Thomas Cook, in 1802. The centerpiece of the town was the Joshua Roberts Tavern, which served as a stopping point for travelers and a gathering place for town residents. General Lafayette famously stopped by the Joshua Roberts Tavern in 1824.

While Cooksville was originally his land, Thomas Cook eventually gave away his ownership of the town to Thomas Beale Dorsey in exchange for a 231-acre plantation. One of the most notable plantations in Cooksville is Shipley’s Adventure. This homestead was where George Shipley lived throughout the mid-to-late 1700s. The main house is constructed around a 1760s log cabin. Over time, the property grew to include an expansion in the 1790s and family room in the 1970s. Today, Shipley’s Adventure has been divided up, and some is used for winemaking.

Another historic property in Cooksville is the Sarah Jane Powell cabin. Thomas Hood, a founder of Howard County and plantation owner, built the cabin for his slave in recognition of her service. She married one of his sons, Alfred Dorsey, and over seven generations of Dorseys have lived at the property since then.

Today, Cooksville, MD is home for over 630 residents. Numerous locations in the town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and you can visit them today!
