Elkridge, MD is a bustling city located in Howard County with a population of over 16,000 residents. While it has grown a great deal over time, Elkridge, MD has humble origins as the oldest settlement in the Howard County and Anne Arundel County area.
Elkridge, MD was first settled thanks to its location on the Patapsco River. The first settlement was called Elkridge Landing and founded in 1690. It served as a port for manufactured iron and tobacco casks to be exported. In 1725, a warehouse was constructed to store all of the tobacco brought to market. As tobacco farms flourished, Elkridge Landing flourished as well. By the early 1760s, an amazing 50% of Anne Arundel County’s tobacco production was processed at Elkridge Landing.
In 1733, the Maryland General Assembly decided to add a 30-acre, 40-lot settlement in the area that would be called Jansen Town. The first attempt to formalize the town failed and a second attempt occurred in 1750. Jansen Town was made to be a place for tobacco farmers and included the Elkridge Furnace and Hockley Forge and Mill. Tragically, Jansen Town burned down in 1825. In the aftermath, the Elkridge Landing post office was founded.
Over the years, Elkridge has been home to numerous industries including iron forging, paper, cotton milling, grist milling and basket weaving. The B&O Railroad was also a major employer, and they used the Thomas Viaduct as a railroad bridge. This bridge is the oldest multiple-arched curved stone railroad bridge still standing in the world, and it carried the first telegraph message from Washington, D.C.
In 2003, the Elkridge Landing area became a designated historic district, and it was added to the Inventory of Historic Properties with the Maryland Historical Trust. Visiting the Elkridge, MD historic district is a great idea whether you live close by or you’re a longtime resident.
