Ellicott City was initially known for milling. Ellicott’s Mills, the original name of the city, was one of the largest manufacturing and milling towns on the entire ease coast. Over time, the town grew to include stables, an oil mill, a grain distillery, sawmills and grain mills. In 1830, Ellicott’s Mills was the first terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The Ellicott City Station is the oldest surviving railroad station in the United States.
At the start of the Civil War, troops marched through Ellicott City and towards Baltimore in response to the Baltimore Riot of 1861. Later that year, Union Army troops briefly occupied Ellicott City to take possession of the Winans Steam Gun that was developed by the railroad builder Ross Winans. Later in the war, Ellicott City homes and churches were used as hospitals for wounded Union soldiers.
The town’s name was officially changed from Ellicott’s Mills to Ellicott City in 1867 after a city incorporation charter was secured. In the late 1800s, trolley service was created from Baltimore to Ellicott City. The double-ended streetcar ran until 1955 when buses replaced it. Over time, the town continued to expand to the 70,000+ city that it is today.
