Olmstead designed numerous notable landmarks including the Jefferson Memorial, Rock Creek Park and the National Mall. The Great Depression took a toll on the island’s expansion. The structure of the island was reorganized, and ownership was passed to the homeowners, which allowed them agency over the future of the island. Gibson Island today is one of the most desirable locales in the state, and the island is considered the most expensive zip code in the state of Maryland. The Island is a gated community and home to many politicians and local professionals.
