Highland Beach, MD is a beautiful town in Anne Arundel County with a population of only 100 residents. While the town is small, it has plenty of character. It’s the oldest of the major African American resort towns in the country, so residents greatly enjoy the warm summer weather and pleasant landscapes. However, during the winter, things get cold! Husky Heating Oil is proud to offer Highland Beach, MD homeowners high-quality heating oil throughout the winter.
Highland Beach, MD was founded along the Chesapeake Bay in the late 1890s by Laura and Charles Douglass. Does that last name sound familiar? That’s because Charles Douglass was the son of the notable abolitionist and activist Frederick Douglass. Highland Beach was founded to be the first African American-owned summer resort in all of the United States. After Douglass and his wife were denied entrance into another resort on the Chesapeake Bay due to their race, he decided to purchase his own beachfront property.
The property included Douglass’s summer home, Twin Oaks. Over the decades, Twin Oaks hosted numerous notable African Americans from the greater Baltimore-Washington area including Frederick Douglass. The community remained incredibly exclusive throughout its history, although the area surrounding it was developed. The streets are all named after famous African Americans to this day and it has no commercial establishments and only 60 homes. Many of the niche African American resort communities that emerged around the same time period closed or became incorporated as part of other communities, so Highland Beach is truly unique.
If you are a Highland Beach, MD homeowner searching for a more affordable way to heat your home during the ice and winter weather-filled Maryland winters, Husky Heating Oil can help. We take pride in offering high-quality heating oil backed up with excellent customer service and competitive pricing.
