Highland, MD is a historic community located in Howard County. Highland, MD is mostly located on the 418-acre land grant that was called Hickory Ridge. Hickory Ridge was a plantation owned by the Ridgley and Hopkins families. The plantation was built in 1794, and it was passed through the generations. While it had numerous names over the years, Hockey Ridge was the name that the Hopkins family renamed it in the 1800s. There is still a family graveyard sitting on the property today.
One of the first businesses constructed at the Highland crossroads was Well’s Tavern. The tavern was built in 1759 by Richard Wells. Eventually, the space turned into a wheelwright’s shop. In 1842, the first post office was opened, which gave the town the name of Walls Crossroads. It was officially named Highland in 1878 in honor of the town’s remarkable elevation compared to most of Howard County.
Highland has always been an agricultural community dedicated to nurturing the fertile soil and farming a variety of crops. The Patuxent River attracted some of the first residents to the area thanks to the convenient water source, and it still attracts some residents today. The population hovers just above 1,000 residents, and the community remains as tight-knit today as it was centuries ago.
