Lisbon, MD is a charming Howard County community nestled between Baltimore and Frederick. While Lisbon is only one square mile, it packs plenty of personality and a surprising amount of history.
Lisbon is the site of the first roundabout in Maryland, which opened in 1993, but there is a storied history before that unique claim to fame. The land that Lisbon sits on was patented by Seth Warfield in 1794. The property was initially known as “Warfield’s Forest” and later was passed on to Caleb Pancoast in 1810. Caleb chose to name the town New Lisbon, which was later shortened to the name that you know it by today.
In the early 1800s, land was deeded for a church that would eventually become a schoolhouse in the late 1800s. New Lisbon was initially divided into one hundred lots that were each ¼ of an acre in size. The town slowly grew over time, which led to the creation of other schools and businesses to serve the community.
Lisbon, MD is also home to the Carr’s Mill Landfill. This was the second landfill created in Howard County, and it closed in 1977. The landfill had to close due to the rapidly growing population and an overloading of hazardous waste and trash. Over the years, the County has cleaned up the site and it is now known as Carr’s Mill Park and is virtually unrecognizable from its previous state.
